The Paddle Score is a single number from 1 (Danger) to 5 (Excellent), built from wind speed and gusts, air and water temperature, UV index, cloud cover, precipitation and visibility — then constrained by fixed safety rules the model is not allowed to override.
The model behind it is a gradient-boosted tree ensemble trained on paddler ratings — human judgements of real days, never a rule’s own output — and constrained so more wind and more rain can only lower a score. How is the paddle score calculated?
The Paddle Score (1–5) is generated by a machine learning model trained on historical paddle conditions. It weighs wind speed, water temperature, air temperature, UV index, cloud cover, and precipitation probability. A score of 5 means excellent conditions; 1 means dangerous — not recommended for paddling.
What wind speed is safe for kayaking?
Generally, wind speeds under 10 mph (9 knots) are considered safe for recreational kayaking. Winds above 15 mph can create challenging conditions for beginners. Kaayko's paddle score automatically factors wind speed into the overall safety rating — any score below 2 indicates winds or conditions that could be dangerous.

How often is the paddle forecast updated?
Every Paddle Score is recomputed on a schedule, once every 15 minutes, and stored — so the number on a card was calculated within the last quarter of an hour, and the card and the forecast page always show the same stored score rather than computing a new one while you wait. The weather observations behind it refresh roughly every two hours and the 3-day hourly forecast roughly every three and a half, which is about as often as the underlying models publish. The forecast page prints how old the reading it is showing you actually is.
